No Shortcuts

There are many couples who embark on different entrepreneurial adventures especially in the world of small and medium-sized businesses. For some, they are able to make it, and for others, for various reasons, eventually let go of their dream. It is challenging indeed to find that life partner and at the same time, your business partner with the same vision and values as yours.

Take it from Rhea Topacio and Dennis Rogacion, a Pinoy entrepreneurial couple from the Netherlands who tell us that there are no magical shortcuts to success and entrepreneurial achievement, real entrepreneurs who started their businesses in a practical way, working their way up, and providing quality products to their customers in different countries. Their entrepreneurial initiatives as a couple mean a tremendous amount of hard work but in return give them a sense of fulfillment. Their distinctive driving force and love strengthen their synergy as they share life and dreams together.

“The only way to get started is to learn how to do something right, plan well and start working”, said Rhea.

Double the strength

Working in a structured, strategic, and constant way, like true serial entrepreneurs, beyond their own peculiarities and uniqueness, Rhea and Dennis transform ideas into innovations. They keep a common thread in their emotional relationship and innovative entrepreneurship. They are proof that creativity and determination can go a long way. Linked by love and business, the power couple emphasizes that their penchant for ideas and their pursuit leads to the creation of their various products.

The two entrepreneurs began their adventure by producing chocolates and cupcakes but later moved on to creating Filipino products.

In 2015, they created Luneta Ice Cream ®, the first Filipino ice cream brand manufactured in Europe. The brand won Foodtruck of the Year in the ice cream category and Gold Award for service excellence at the NEDERLANDSE HORECA PRIJZEN 2020.

Endless Opportunities

Rhea and Dennis have transformed their bond into a common passion. They enjoy talking about concepts and thinking about how everything will evolve. As entrepreneurs, Dennis believes that even if their hard work is starting to pay off, they still need to learn.

“An entrepreneurial mindset together with a great desire to study, experiment, and grow is what we started with when we were in the first years of our business.”

Rhea believes that entering the food business is, in fact, one of the ways to be successful. Rhea and Dennis created products that were not readily available in Europe before.

“There are favorite Filipino products we couldn’t find here in Europe, so we thought, why not make them ourselves?” said Rhea.

During the pandemic, the couple launched Guapito Beer ®, the first Filipino craft beer in Europe, and Ubeness® Filipino Flavors Collection- a selection of Filipino food flavorings. The flavoring line also includes Buco Pandanness, Mangoness, and Langkaness, available at 20ml and 250ml bottles. In 2021, additional lines of ice cream were launched — Manong Sorbetero Filipino Ice Cream and Miyamoto Japanese Ice Cream.

The free time they had at the beginning was just a hobby which then became a real job and business. Before starting a business, before letting oneself be attracted by the fascinating dream of success, it must first be built according to Rhea. It all started on their kitchen table with commitment and persistence. Over time, their products have managed to conquer the European markets. Their products are sold in different Asian and Filipino stores, stocked in almost 31 countries up and down Europe.

Family legacy

Married for more than a decade, it was their common thirst for independence that prompted them to start a business together. A lifestyle choice that they have never regretted and thanks to which they have progressed at the same pace. Their tandem has allowed them to evolve and grow together in business and as a family.

With the couple’s long-term vision of maintaining the Filipino food legacy, Pamana Foods (a brand of Pamana World) will continuously grow in developing new products and brands with local and international partnerships to promote Filipino taste in Europe. The desire to grow and succeed in another country was so great that there were no excuses, and every obstacle is considered an opportunity.

For them, long-term planning and hard work are still the path to thriving in any endeavor. Every entrepreneur has his own way of doing business, but there is a basic thing that Rhea wants aspiring entrepreneurs to remember –

“You have to start somewhere. Ideas and opportunities don’t materialize out of thin air.”

Pinoy brands Luneta ice cream at Guapito beer namamayagpag sa Netherlands

Pinoy brands Luneta ice cream at Guapito beer namamayagpag sa Netherlands

 by Bernie V. Franco | SEP 28, 2021

A Pinoy couple in the Netherlands developed the first Filipino ice cream and beer in the said country as their way to promote Filipino flavors out of the Philippines. The ice cream is called Luneta, while the beer is called Guapito. Kaya after two years matapos ikasal at wala pang work, nag-focus si Rhea sa pagbi-bake na nauwi sa isang income-generating project.

So, wala kaming pondo. Minsan kulang kami sa oras, kasi may full-time job yung asawa ko. May anak pa kaming maliit.

The couple Rhea Topacio and Dennis Rogacion now hold dual citizenship, as Filipino-Dutch.

PANDEMIC HAPPENED

So, nagustuhan namin.”

“Lahat ng 37 countries under the European Union,” sambit ni Rhea.

Laging may paraan.”

Luneta Ice Cream gives Pinoys in Europe a sweet taste of home

Luneta Ice Cream gives Pinoys in Europe a sweet taste of home

By  Aleeyah Jowen Peñafiel | March 7, 2020

Luneta Ice Cream
Pinoy flavors of Luneta Ice Cream Available in Europe

Luneta Ice Cream, a Dutch company with Filipino roots based in Hoofddorp, The Netherlands, is giving overseas Pinoys in Europe a sweet taste of home.

The Pinoy-taste in ice cream is becoming more and more popular in the Netherlands and is already available in Belgium, United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Lithuania, and Sweden!

The memories of summers in the Philippines are what inspired the couple Dennis Rogacion and Rhea Topacio to come up with a line of artisan ice cream and called it after the Luneta, also known as Rizal Park, a historical park located in the heart of Manila and famous for a perfect destination for family days, weekend hangouts, and couple budget dating. Luneta is a free park that has colorful fountain shows every night. Around the area are free museums where you can visit while appreciating Pinoy culture.

“We want to offer everyone, Filipinos and Europeans alike, the kind of food that makes someone feel good. Our products give you that cozy feeling, whether you are having a bad day or enjoying a good time. For our Filipino customers, it gives them a sense of being home, a reminder of how home tastes like.” says Rogacion.

With flavors such as ube (purple yam) and Philippine mango macapuno (coconut), Kapeng Barako (coffee), Pandan, Rocky Road, Classic Vanilla, Halo-halo, Banana, Melon and Lychee, and Pineapple, Luneta Ice Cream not only arouses your appetite but also reminds one of the beautiful time of growing up in the Philippines.

“Our ice creams are made with no additional artificial emulsifiers or stabilizers. Most flavors are hard to find and some are even unique to the European palate. You could say that this is our way of introducing the goodness of Filipino food to the Europeans albeit in a very sweet way,” says Topacio.

Rocky Road, Buco Panda, Halo-halo, Mango, Ube Macapuno are the bestsellers of Luneta Ice Cream.

The Filipino couple makes sure that the Luneta Ice Cream is visible in every food festival in The Netherlands to make it more accessible to the public.

“We want to promote Filipino cuisine to other nationalities apart from the Filipinos through our product. The Dutch are willing to try new things. This is good for the whole Filipino community because it makes us proud of our heritage,” says Rogacion in an interview with ABS-CBN.

The home-made Luneta Ice Cream is already making its name in the competitive ice cream market with Luneta Ice Cream grabbing two National Prizes – the 2020 Food Truck of the Year Award (Ice Cream category) and Gold Award for excellence in product and service at the De Nederlandse HORECA (Hotels, Restaurants, and Café) Prijzen.

The Pinoy ice cream is available in the biggest Asian supermarket in the Netherlands. After expanding outside The Netherlands, Topacio and Rogacion want to be present in Middle East and to be available in many countries where Filipinos are scattered and to bring it back where it should have started.

“Love and passion in what you do. Maintain, and eventually develop, your unique selling proposition. Have a realizable vision. Empathize with your customers—bring them happiness, not just a product. Plan with a balanced, idealistic but realistic mind. Think outside the box. Deliver beyond what is expected. Life lessons talaga ito, ever since,” says Topacio as she shares her most valuable lesson.

If you want to get a sweet taste of home, Luneta Ice Cream will be at Puremarkt Park Frankendael Amsterdam on April 26th to August 30th. And on June 14th, Luneta Ice Cream Foodtruck is coming again to Antwerp for the Festivals of the Philippines-Independence Day Celebration. Visit them and enjoy Luneta Ice Cream’s Unique Filipino and Asian Ice Creams, Gluten-free, lactose-free and vegetarian Sorbet, and the very colorful and special Halo-halo.

Pinoy Halo-Halo made it to the list Most Popular Asian Desserts of Taste Atlas with a mix of white and red beans, nata de coco, kaong, Jack fruit, banana and milk. Watch how Rogacion and Topacio make this all-time Filipino dessert as they also talk about their famous Ube Ice Cream and the story behind their ice cream business.

First Filipino ice cream brand gaining ground in Europe

First Filipino ice cream brand gaining ground in Europe

THE HAGUE, The Netherlands – The first Filipino ice cream in Europe was started in a family kitchen using a portable ice cream maker.

With its distinctively Filipino taste, it became popular in the Netherlands and is already available in Belgium, UK, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden to cater to Filipinos who have longed for the taste of home.

For couple Rhea Topacio and Dennis Rogacion, finding the perfect Filipino ice cream blend was not easy. The line of ice cream began through trials and errors with friends as tasters.

Luneta Ice Cream was launched in 2015, and soon became a household name among the Filipino community in the Netherlands, thanks to its catchy and familiar name and flavors that cater to the Filipino palate.

Luneta Ice Cream’s bestsellers are ube (purple yam) and Philippine mango. Other flavors include Macapuno (coconut), Kapeng Barako (coffee), Pandan, Rocky Road, Classic Vanilla, Banana, Melon and Lychee, and Pineapple sorbet —flavors that Filipinos grew up with.

“It should be something that reminds every Filipino of what is the Philippines. Ganun kami lumaki,” said Topacio of the origin of their ice cream.

(When you say that word, you remember the Philippines and when you say Luneta (Park), you think of the dirty ice cream. Whatever happens in Manila, you always come back to Luneta. Every Sunday, you go to Luneta. That’s how we grew up.)

Topacio’s husband, Dennis, migrated to the Netherlands when he was a teenager to join his father who was working in an airline company. He basically grew up in the Netherlands but had memories of the Luneta Park.

The couple were first introduced to each other online through a common friend in Manila. They started as good friends who gave each other advice. Dennis came to Manila after 16 years of being away to meet Topacio. The rest is history and she came to The Netherlands in 2010 to join him.

Topacio had a flourishing career in Manila as head of marketing of a logistics chain but she was confronted with uncertainties in The Netherlands, especially with limited job opportunities. She decided to take her own chance and build a company to start her small businesses that range from marketing Filipino products and building webpages, to making artisanal chocolates and cupcakes.

“We even went into the Balikbayan box business,” said Topacio.

Dennis Rogacion and Rhea Topacio, the husband-and-wife team behind Luneta Ice Cream, with their daughter Rheaen. Jofelle Tesorio, ABS-CBN News

Both didn’t have a solid business background but Rogacion was into procurement and knew how to navigate the Dutch system. He underwent training in hotel, restaurant and catering, a requirement to get into the business of selling ice cream, a food product.

They make sure that the Pinoy ice cream is visible in every food festival in The Netherlands to make it more accessible to the public. They also introduced to the Dutch Filipino desserts like halo-halo topped with ice cream.

“We want to promote Filipino cuisine to other nationalities apart from the Filipinos through our product. The Dutch are willing to try new things. This is good for the whole Filipino community because it makes us proud of our heritage,” said Rogacion.

They couple still cook the ingredients themselves and personally deliver the ice cream to clients and distributors. The ice cream is still made artisanal-style and in smaller batches per production to keep the quality.

“So community-based kami talaga. So pati sa pagbebenta, sa stores, more with friendships na patuloy na sumusuporta sa amin so iyon ang pinaka-essence ng Luneta. Wala kaming employees. Talagang partnership with different companies,” said Rhea.

(From selling, in looking for stores, we are helped by friends who have been supporting us. That’s the very essence of Luneta. We don’t have employees. It is just partnership with different companies).

This Pinoy ice cream is slowly making its niche in the competitive ice cream market. It is available in the biggest Asian supermarket chain in the Netherlands and different Filipino distributors. After expanding outside The Netherlands, they want to be present in Middle East and to be available in many countries where Filipinos are scattered and to bring it back where it should have started.

So in a couple of years, we are hoping that we will be there.”

(That’s the ultimate dream, to make Luneta available in the Philippines.)
